PrEP is for people who don’t have HIV, and are at higher risk for contracting HIV. That includes:
- Men who have sex with men, transgender women, and gender diverse people.
- Heterosexual men and women who have high-risk exposures.
- People whose partners have a known HIV infection, sex workers, or who have sex with a person at high risk for HIV.
- People who inject drugs.
- PrEP does not provide protection against other STIs, like chlamydia or syphilis. Make sure to use barrier methods, such as condoms, to help keep you protected against other STIs and continue to get tested regularly.
- The key difference between PrEP and PEP is the timing of the treatment.
- PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is designed to be taken daily as a precaution in case of an exposure to HIV that may occur.
- PEP is post-exposure prophylaxis and is intended to be taken after a possible exposure to HIV.
