Internal Medicine

Essential healthcare services are offered by the Family Medicine Clinic to people and families of all ages, with an emphasis on wellness, prevention, and continuity of care.

What is the role of an internal medicine specialist?

Internal medicine specialists, also known as internists or doctors of internal medicine, are highly skilled in dealing with complex medical cases. They specialize in adult medicine and undergo specialized training to diagnose challenging medical conditions, manage severe chronic illnesses, and provide comprehensive care to patients with multiple complex conditions.

Internal medicine encompasses various subspecialties, including allergy and immunology, cardiology (heart diseases), endocrinology (hormone disorders), hematology (blood disorders), infectious diseases, gastroenterology (gut diseases), nephrology (kidney diseases), oncology (cancer), pulmonology (lung disorders), and rheumatology (arthritis and musculoskeletal disorders).

Similar to primary care physicians, internists may refer patients to subspecialists, particularly for cancer screenings. “Screenings play a crucial role in cancer prevention. Detecting it at an early stage enables more effective treatment.”

If you require additional screenings, such as a colonoscopy for colon cancer, we can refer you to specialists or sub-specialists within the field of internal medicine, such as a gastroenterologist who would oversee the procedure.
